Now, when you search for entertainment or news-related topics, instead of a long list of results, you’ll get a box with vertical tabs that give you several different ways to examine the topic.
For example, if you type in the name of a movie, you’ll get the latest news about it in the “Overview” tab. You can read reviews in the “Stories” tab, watch trailers for the movie in the “Videos” tab, or check out the latest buzz about the movie in the “Twitter” tab.
The changes make Yahoo search quite different from Microsoft’s Bing, although both are based on the same technology. Yahoo obviously wants to make its search more streamlined and give it a curated look, instead of letting the user pick from a long list of links.
Besides making the search results easier to navigate, Yahoo also tries to help the users decide what to search. Type in the name of a musician into Yahoo’s search, and Yahoo will offer you a couple of related names to try out on top of the search result box. Furthermore, the upper right side of Yahoo’s homepage now features a list of trending topics – clicking on one of these will take you to the search results for that particular topic.
Finally, Yahoo has also improved web search for mobile devices using HTML5 technology; for example, searching for a stock quote will bring you its current price and related news first, followed by a list of standard search results. You can try it out by visiting m.yahoo.com on your mobile web browser.
